Teacher Bio

Taylor Perry brings two decades of musical experience to her role as a piano instructor. She has been teaching since opening Perry Piano Studio in 2011. Her educational background includes a master's degree in piano performance with a concentration in piano pedagogy, as well as a bachelor of arts in music and a bachelor of science in human development & family science. This varied educational background informs an integrative, student-centered teaching approach as Taylor combines her musical expertise with an understanding of the physical, cognitive, and emotional development of her students. In addition to her pedagogical and performing pursuits, Taylor has a passion for research and writing.

Taylor has studied piano privately with Rebekah Healan and with Dr. Martha Thomas, and in July 2015 had the pleasure of studying and performing at the Interharmony International Music Festival in Arcidosso, Italy. In 2016 she received the Jana K. Ritchie Award, which recognizes outstanding piano students who demonstrate a high level of musicianship and aspire to a career in studio teaching. Also in 2016, her writing was featured in an undergraduate journal, The Classic Journal. During her graduate studies at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, Taylor received the Athon-Hughes-Cook Piano Pedagogy Award and the Director's Excellence Award. She was also inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society.

When she is away from the piano, Taylor enjoys photography, rock climbing, songwriting, and learning new instruments.

About

Teaching Philosophy

Taylor’s teaching philosophy is guided by a strong belief in the holistic power of music study to foster students’ overall development. Through music, students can gain a positive sense of self efficacy alongside skills of self regulation, metacognition, and mindfulness.

Lessons focus on developing proper playing technique and an understanding of music theory, with an emphasis on problem solving skills and thoughtful practice. Instruction also fosters students’ creative growth by encouraging interest in improvisation and the functional study of lead sheets and chord charts.

Students gain performance experience and demonstrate their musical growth to friends and family at a recital performance at the end of each semester. Additional performance opportunities at a local retirement home present a chance for students to share music with others in the community; the Halloween Recital is a particular favorite among the students!

Most importantly, Taylor prioritizes her students’ enjoyment and appreciation of music, striving to infuse a sense of excitement and fun into every lesson.
